RECALL: “Something different and something special”
Theatre Review by SANDRO MONETTI

Huge praise should go to LA’s Visceral theatre company for trying something different on the stage scene by mounting a series of sci-fi, thriller and horror plays – and they’ve got something really special with their latest production, Recall.

Unsettling and unforgettable, it’s a tense, complicated but always watchable tale set in a future America where the government keeps a close eye on teenagers prone to violence, presumably before they can commit spree killings in schools.

Closely monitored in this story is 13-year-old Lucy, a sulky and sinister 13-year-old superbly played by a mesmeric Madeline Bertani.

She’s on the run with her unlucky in love mother Justine, an engrossing Karen Nicole, who is determined to prevent her dangerous daughter being “recalled” by the authorities.

But when a mystery man, a disturbed loner and a government agent enter their lives, it’s clear that death is coming for someone…

Director Dan Spurgeon finds the menace in writer Eliza Clark’s clever script and the lighting, set and sound all combine to create a chilling atmosphere.
