Thespian Thoughts – Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” by the Kentwood Players is entertaining and chilling.

Title: “Dracula”

An eerie mood is created through stage lighting and the audience is transported into Dracula’s world. The creepy music also contributes a great deal of mystery to the play. From time to time, I could hear members of the audience shriek from such spookiness.
– Erica Mer – ActorsEntertainment.com

Hi, I’m Erica Mer from Actors Entertainment, welcome to Thespian Thoughts, for reviews of the best of small theater. I had the pleasure of enjoying the entertaining and chilling version of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” by the Kentwood Players at the Westchester Playhouse in Westchester, California. The vampire play is dramatized by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston. The Westchester Playhouse is a perfect example of community-supported theater. The time and effort put into the production of “Dracula” was commendable. Director Shawn K. Summerer puts his own twist on Stoker’s version, while he still captures the tone that brings audiences back to the timeless story.

Vampires capture our imagination throughout history. Recently, hit movies such as Twilight and television shows such as True Blood entice audiences with its dark and bloody stories. Kudos to this illuminating community production who steps back from the mainstream vampires and tells the classic tale of “Dracula.” During the play, blood and gore was visually spared, which positively broadened the audience’s imagination.

While this version of “Dracula” is tame, it is suitable for a mature audience. The story is both dark and complex and some younger audiences might not understand. I think it is very important for people to support a local community based play. Every body that helped put the play together, worked extremely hard and should be recognized.

“Dracula” plays Fridays through Sundays until October 16th. For more details, please visit Kentwood Players.

Kentwood Players “DRACULA” receives additional critical praise:

Shawn K. Summerer’s direction, Tony Pereslete’s set and Robert Davis’ lighting combine to create an eerie atmosphere. Galiher is enjoyable in the iconic role. A smooth talker with a knowing glance, he is able to be a kindly older gentleman one moment and a powerful and nasty villain the next. The wild-eyed Guay injects some humor and oddness into the early proceedings, and the first-act climax, thanks to one of the evening’s impressive special effects, is legitimately shocking.
- Jeff Favre, The Daily Breeze

Summerer, making his directorial debut at Kentwood, creates a very professionally-crafted production with his blending of music, lighting and special effects. The play’s major figure, the blood-sucking Count Dracula, is given a vibrant, compelling, performance by Galiher. He has a larger-than-life stage presence and is perfectly cast, as are all the other cast members.
- Steven Lieberman – The Culver City Observer

Summerer brings a strong theatre background of directing and acting. He also has a film background which is apparent in his innovative use of lighting and music which brings a cinematic, dramatic and more realistic approach to this production. “Dracula” is a campy, entertaining take on the novel that your child can actually enjoy. Kentwood has successfully blended a good cast, an innovative director, and effective use of set to provide an enjoyable and entertaining experience.
- Alex Schildkret – Santa Clarita Valley Independent

Vampires and their ilk have made yet another comeback in recent times. This version is more serious and dramatic with a touch of mystery added; More thrills and drama involved than actual scares!
- Rich Borowy – ACCESSIBLY LIVE OFF-LINE

I was very impressed with this production. The pace was lively, the plot engaging, with enough twists and turns to keep any viewer engaged. Particularly entertaining was the Dom DeLuise-like character of Jeffrey Olin who plays the bumbling attendant, Mr. Butterworth. Also notable was Paul Guay, as the wailing Renfield, whose screams always sent chills down my spine.

Thespian Thoughts Theatre Review: SIN!

SIN

SIN is an authentic look at what it means to be human.
   - Melissa Suzanne, Reviewer

Theatre: Playhouse West Repertory Theater

Run: Through December 11th

“SIN” is an original play written by Wendy Macloed and directed by Tony Savant, which highlights the rocky reality of human relationships as it relates to seven particular character flaws: lust, sloth, greed, gluttony, envy, wrath and pride. “Avery Bly” is an on-air traffic reporter struggling with the relationships in her own life, some of a very personal nature like her alcoholic ex-husband and her ailing brother, and some of a superficial nature like her new boss and a stranger in a bar. Each person in her life that we meet in this play strongly exemplifies one of the “seven deadly sins.” “Avery” becomes overwhelmed by the apparent flaws in each person she encounters, as she maintains an artificial veil of stability and outer calm. But during a 24 hour period, the night before the 1989 earthquake in San Francisco, everything in her life also begins to crumble. In the end, “Avery” is able to see the truth of each of these individuals as well as acknowledge the truth within herself.

The story of “SIN” was interesting, the characters humorous and illuminating, and the writing was genuine. Each of these characters reminded me of someone I knew, and I appreciated the fact that it was so believable and real. Overall, the acting was completely professional; this was a performance I could have been easily watching on the big screen. There were stand-out performances from laugh-out-loud funny (Bradley Hasemeyer and Jason Fox) to intense and emotional (Elena Fabri and Tim Coultas). This is an amazing small theater find that stirs the emotions while subtly encouraging you to look within. What more can you ask for?

Cast:
AVERY: Elena Fabri
LOUIS (Lust): Rory Coyle
MICHAEL (Sloth): Lance Delgado
JONATHAN (Greed): Bradley Hasemeyer
HELEN (Sloth) Holly Clapham
FRED (Envy): Vito Viscuso
JASON (Wrath): Jason Fox
GERARD (Pride): Tim Coultas

Title: Follow Your Dreams

Theatre:  Secret Rose Theatre

Seats:  60 (49 twenty-two inch screening room style theatre seats

Run Dates: Through October 31st.

Are you ready to follow your dreams?

Who would have thought a single room in a telemarketing firm could hold so much drama? Well, the transformed room in the Secret Rose Theatre is overloading with drama. We follow ten vivacious individuals, each harnessing hidden dreams, secret lives … and some damn good singing voices.

Follow Your Dreams is an original musical, written and produced by Laurie Stevens and Ronald Jacobs. It follows ten individuals from different walks of life, gathered together in one telemarketing room. Each tires their hardest to do the same one thing … sell the diet pill, “Flab U Less.” At the same time, each is strives to pursue their deepest passions so they will NEVER have to make another mundane sales call again.

We follow their individual desires as they influence each other through the comedies, dramas and tragedies of their lives. As the play moves forward, you begin to sympathize with what they are going through. The energy and passion of all ten actors never lagged and their enthusiasm was deeply inspiring and motivating. And, isn’t that what theatre’s all about in the end? Being moved. Through ten songs, a plethora of awesome outfits, some great lines, witty jokes, death, romance, and touching dialogue, Follow your dreams managed to move us emotionally.

A noteworthy mention goes to the beautiful voice of ‘Judy Ho’ who played the strikingly, aggressively sexy Tammy. With a pair of lungs like that, she is definitely going far. I was particularly touched by the sensitive and gripping actor, ‘Hector Hank’, whose portrayal of a struggling drug addict was emotional and incredibly realistic.

I particularly sympathized with “Dan Woren’s” character who had to rule over the combined quirky characters in the office. His performance was extremeley convincing. Poor man to supervise all those dreamers!

A must see for all those who work in Telemarketing. And, of course, for anyone who wants to be inspired to Follow Your Dreams. Which I believe is all of us.

Runs through October 31st.

BIG RIVER…. BIG Winner
If you never got to read the ‘Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ as a child….or as an adult …., then you are in luck this fall, as the Actor’s Co-op has graced the Crossley Theatre in Hollywood with the vivacious voice behind Mark Twain’s Great American Novel.

The Tony Award winning Musical, BIG RIVER: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been brought to life by an alarmingly talented cast, which proves that musicals in Hollywood are as much alive & kicking as on any stage in New York City.

Directed by the creative Richard Israel, who recently worked on the Los Angeles Premiere of ‘Big-The Musical’, the story chronicles the journey of the beloved literary figure, Huckleberry Finn, played by the criminally captivating, Sean Hankinson, who narrates his musical journey with such energy and inviting vulnerability, that you can’t seem to take your eyes off his, even as the play draws on towards the end.

Huck Finn, escapes from his wretched Aunts and drunken Pap, cleverly faking his own death, and engages in a journey down the Mississippi River with the escaped slave, Jim, played by James Fowler, an actor with a rich depth to his soul. His drive to find his wife and children is portrayed with great fervour, however, he seemed much too clever to convince me that he was an uneducated scavenge. Their growing friendship is touching, and their beautiful harmonizing voices in ‘River in the Rain’, combined with the atmospheric starlight’s, almost made you forget you were at a small theatre in Hollywood.

Along the way, their encounters with the witty ‘Duke’ and ‘King’, who are really escaped prisoners, provide a wonderful comedic addition to the journey. The relationship between the two actors is electrifying to watch and both have a fine flair for comedic timing. I particularly enjoyed, Bruce Green’s passionate dramatic performance which he so wittily renames, ‘Hamlet’s immortal soliloquy’, and if Stephen Reynolds’ belly dancing as a disguised creature they call ‘nonsuch’, not quite a man or a woman with a 3rd breast and eye in the middle of his nose, doesn’t get you smiling, I don’t know what will! Throughout the play we see Huck deal with the moral conflict with the received values of the society in which he lives. He ends up making a moral choice based on his own evaluation of Jim’s friendship and human worth, a decision in direct opposition to what he is taught. By the end of the play both Huck and Jim find the freedom they are longing for, and Huck declares, quite rightly so, he is quite done to be writing his story. And I can hardly blame him after all the poor boy has gone through.

The whole cast work in great ensemble, and even the smaller sub characters drive the play with energy and passion. The angelic voices of the ‘slaves’ were moving, and the choreography was slick and kept you , absorbed. A noteworthy mention goes to Bryce Blue, who played the creative little Tom Sawyer. His tom foolery and playfulness made him contagiously entertaining. I became the biggest fan, however, of David Atkinson. He played the drunken Pap and a variation of other characters with such conviction, realism and richness, I found it quite a shame I couldn’t get to experience a little more of him throughout .

If you want to experience laughter and perhaps a tear or two, don’t miss out seeing this fresh, young, highly talented cast relive this traditional, endearing tale.
