Thespian Thoughts – Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” by the Kentwood Players is entertaining and chilling.

Title: “Dracula”

An eerie mood is created through stage lighting and the audience is transported into Dracula’s world. The creepy music also contributes a great deal of mystery to the play. From time to time, I could hear members of the audience shriek from such spookiness.
– Erica Mer – ActorsEntertainment.com

Hi, I’m Erica Mer from Actors Entertainment, welcome to Thespian Thoughts, for reviews of the best of small theater. I had the pleasure of enjoying the entertaining and chilling version of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” by the Kentwood Players at the Westchester Playhouse in Westchester, California. The vampire play is dramatized by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston. The Westchester Playhouse is a perfect example of community-supported theater. The time and effort put into the production of “Dracula” was commendable. Director Shawn K. Summerer puts his own twist on Stoker’s version, while he still captures the tone that brings audiences back to the timeless story.

Vampires capture our imagination throughout history. Recently, hit movies such as Twilight and television shows such as True Blood entice audiences with its dark and bloody stories. Kudos to this illuminating community production who steps back from the mainstream vampires and tells the classic tale of “Dracula.” During the play, blood and gore was visually spared, which positively broadened the audience’s imagination.

An eerie mood is created through stage lighting and the audience is transported into Dracula’s world. The creepy music also contributes a great deal of mystery to the play. From time to time, I could hear members of the audience shriek from such spookiness.

While this version of “Dracula” is tame, it is suitable for a mature audience. The story is both dark and complex and some younger audiences might not understand. I think it is very important for people to support a local community based play. Every body that helped put the play together, worked extremely hard and should be recognized.

Alison Mattiza (Producer)
Elizabeth Bouton-Summerer (Produer)
Tony Pereslete (Set Design)
Robert Davis (Lighting Design)
Sheridan Cole Crawford (Costume Design)
Jon Sparks (Costume Design)

Kentwood Players “DRACULA” receives additional critical praise:

Shawn K. Summerer’s direction, Tony Pereslete’s set and Robert Davis’ lighting combine to create an eerie atmosphere. Galiher is enjoyable in the iconic role. A smooth talker with a knowing glance, he is able to be a kindly older gentleman one moment and a powerful and nasty villain the next. The wild-eyed Guay injects some humor and oddness into the early proceedings, and the first-act climax, thanks to one of the evening’s impressive special effects, is legitimately shocking.
- Jeff Favre, The Daily Breeze

Summerer, making his directorial debut at Kentwood, creates a very professionally-crafted production with his blending of music, lighting and special effects. The play’s major figure, the blood-sucking Count Dracula, is given a vibrant, compelling, performance by Galiher. He has a larger-than-life stage presence and is perfectly cast, as are all the other cast members.
- Steven Lieberman – The Culver City Observer

Summerer brings a strong theatre background of directing and acting. He also has a film background which is apparent in his innovative use of lighting and music which brings a cinematic, dramatic and more realistic approach to this production. “Dracula” is a campy, entertaining take on the novel that your child can actually enjoy. Kentwood has successfully blended a good cast, an innovative director, and effective use of set to provide an enjoyable and entertaining experience.
- Alex Schildkret – Santa Clarita Valley Independent

Vampires and their ilk have made yet another comeback in recent times. This version is more serious and dramatic with a touch of mystery added; More thrills and drama involved than actual scares!
- Rich Borowy – ACCESSIBLY LIVE OFF-LINE

I was very impressed with this production. The pace was lively, the plot engaging, with enough twists and turns to keep any viewer engaged. Particularly entertaining was the Dom DeLuise-like character of Jeffrey Olin who plays the bumbling attendant, Mr. Butterworth. Also notable was Paul Guay, as the wailing Renfield, whose screams always sent chills down my spine.

Title: “True West”
“It’s not a film, it’s a movie.”

Hi, I’m Erica Mer from Actors Entertainment, welcome to Thespian Thoughts, for theater reviews. I highly recommend the attendance of Sam Shepard’s “True West,” a fantastic and witty play at the Whitmore Eclectic Theater in Los Angeles, CA.

James Whitmore

James Whitmore

“The late James Whitmore put the finishing touches on his dream and legacy, The Whitmore Eclectic Theater.” This theater is located in Los Angeles, CA and housed the production with an intimate and comfortable environment. The talented Sam Shepard wrote the play, while Aliah Whitmore directed. Both Shepard and Whitmore put together a story that is both clever and relatable. In addition, the acting in “True West” was extremely strong. From this, the audience can engage with the characters, with both drama and humor.
The two lead actors in “True West,” Andre Verderame and Andrew Patton play brothers who find themselves under the same roof after years apart. Now as a girl, it was funny to watch a story about two men with lots of testosterone and constantly yell and fight. However, this is allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and really enjoy the distinction between men and women. “True West was comical, and both actors did an excellent job of feeding off one another. I left the theater happily pleased with “True West.”
I highly recommend the attendance of Sam Shepard’s “True West” at the Whitmore Eclectic Theater in Los Angeles, CA.

Ben Babylon

Ben Babylon

Ben Babylon is ahead of his time. This young musician/singer/songwriter grew up watching his father, Grammy-winning keyboardist Guy Babylon, work closely with Elton John. Now, just over a year after his father’s untimely passing, Ben is following in his footsteps, writing songs with insightful lyrics and laying the groundwork for his own musical career. His first recorded song, “Goodbye Superman,” which he wrote in memory of his father, has attracted international attention and been performed at such venues as House of Blues, The Canyon Club, The Mint, Yoshi’s Oakland and elsewhere. It is available for download on iTunes. Ben is now recording his first album consisting of all original material.

As the percussionist with the Elton John Band since 1997, John Mahon was a friend of Guy Babylon, and remains close to Ben. He has given of his time to Ben, offering musical advice and helping him in the recording studio. When he is not touring or recording with Elton John, John Mahon often works on his own recording projects and those of others. He has worked with Billy Joel, Backstreet Boys, Sting, Mary J. Blidge, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Ray Charles and many more leading artists. In his free time, he enjoys mountain biking and photography.

Thespian Thoughts – “Clean House:” “If you do not clean, how do you know if you make progress in life”

“If you do not clean, how do you know if you make progress in life”

The International City Theater presents the stage production of “Clean House.” The play’s writer, Sarah Ruhl, has received a great amount of attention, Clean House, “Won the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, awarded annually to the best English-language play written by a women and it was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.” In an interview, Ruhl says, “I like to see people speaking ordinary words in strange places, or people speaking extraordinary words in ordinary places.” Within this stage show, Ruhl composes a very clever and extremely hilarious story about a group of people; their interaction takes place inside a home where these characters, together, deal with love, tragedy and the power of a good joke. The play flows with beautiful choreography and I highly recommend it, especially if you want to laugh, a lot.

Caryn Desai directs “Clean House” and her excellence shows throughout the play. Desai “is an award-winning director with awards and nominations from LA Drama Critics Circle, LA Weekly, Drama Logue, Robby, Ovation, and NAACP for her productions.” After I read the biography on the director, I knew I was in for a treat and was very excited to watch the story unfold. Desai says, “There’s always a fine line between comedy and tragedy and it’s an especially treacherous balancing act in this play.”

I found myself laughing throughout the whole show, even after a tragic event. The characters find the humor and make jokes to lighten up the mood, but not in a disrespectful way. This allows the audience to take very serious subject matters, and switch negative feelings to joyful ones. The actors do a great job of successfully conveying this with such ease.

It’s a pleasure to watch the five actors who grace the stage. Their performance feels so real, it’s as if they put it together, unscripted. This makes for a really unique and a very real experience. The group of actors in this play are; Rob Roy Cesar, Kathy Bell Denton, Eileen Galindo, Nadia Nardini, and Caryn West. They all bring talent and charisma to the stage.

The play “Clean House” should definitely not be missed, especially if you’re feeling a bit sad or confused, there’s nothing better than listening to a good joke and just laughing. This play brings that and definitely left me walking to my car laughing and brightened up my day. Let it brighten up yours!

A perfect joke is somewhere in between an angel and a fart.
