Thespian Thoughts Theatre Review of “Double Bind” – review by Sandro Monetti

Thespian Thoughts Theatre Review of DOUBLE BIND

When the big bad wolf comes knocking at the door, you shouldn’t let him in. But from the moment the couple at the center of this tense new play turn the lock, they are suddenly in trouble.
- Review by SANDRO MONETTI

Double Bind, at Theatre Asylum, Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles
doublebind1

Reformed bad boy Sam has settled down to a life of domesticity with his smart and sensible girlfriend Laura and their two pet goldfish. Then his wildman old pal Frank shows up – high on drugs and low on funds – and begins to tempt Sam to join him for an adventurous life on the wrong side of the tracks.

An unconventional tug of love breaks out as Laura and Frank fight for the heart and soul of Sam, who is torn between being a family man or a free spirit.

Ceri Bethan is outstanding and always utterly real as Laura, whose heart you can almost hear breaking when the man she loves tells her he hates his life. Clark Freeman shines as her unworthy boyfriend Sam, who transforms from disciplined journalist to disreputable junkie over the show’s 80 minutes.

Blake Shields Abramovitz, who also wrote the play, brings both menace and intelligence to Frank and spews a stream of memorable lines like: “If you want to know about the dark forest you’ve got to live there.”

Director Aaron Lyons cleverly presents the show – which gets its world premiere at the Hollywood Fringe Festival – as a battle of the sexes as a mature young woman struggles to connect with two clearly immature men in their thirties.

New research this week revealed that women mature at 32 but men stay immature until 43 – a statistic that would be hard to argue with by anyone lucky enough to see this well observed play.

Thespian Thoughts Theatre Review of Two Rooms – review by Sandro Monetti

TWO ROOMS …..at The Complex, Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles.
“Compelling drama at its finest has come to the Hollywood Fringe Festival in the form of this hostage tale which tugs at the heartstrings.”
Review by: SANDRO MONETTI

When her husband is taken prisoner in Beirut by Shiite Muslim extremists, agonized Lainie Wells strips his home office bare and sits in this self created prison day after day hoping for good news.

Meanwhile in a bare cell in the Lebanon, kidnapped and blindfolded Michael Wells tries to raise his spirits by composing love letters to his wife that he knows he’ll never get to send.

As days turn into years, Lainie must decide if the best way to bring him home is to stay silent and let the diplomats do their work or to give emotional media interviews pressuring the government into action.

Belinda Gosbee brilliantly captures her character’s dilemma in a tour de force as loving Lainie who is being manipulated by both a seemingly sympathetic journalist (played by a quicksilver Mario Vernazza) and an apparently supportive State Department official (a cool and composed Catherine Siggins).

As the hostage, Christopher DeVinny creates a heartfelt and optimistic character who has you willing the play to have a happy ending.
The whole enterprise works so well thanks to the clever direction of Amir Korangy who makes sure never to succumb to sentimentality but still manages to create a hugely moving love story.

TWO ROOMS by Lee Blessing at Complex Theatres, 6476 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles
Remaining performances, Sat June 15 at 5.45pm, Fri June 21 at 8.30pm, Sat June 22 at 8.30pm.
Tickets $14.50 from Hollywood Fringe

A little about the talented Actress & Poet Hélène Cardona:
Actress Hélène Cardona trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and with Ellen Burstyn at the Actors’ Studio in New York. Her first play was Wild Honey by Chekhov (Sofya) , her first movie role was in One Fine Day, in which she had a very funny scene opposite Michelle Pfeiffer, and her first TV roles were on One Life to Live, Another World and the TV series Law & Order.

Hélène was very fortunate to work with Lawrence Kasdan in Mumford playing the raw and very emotionally charged role of Candy, Helene Cardona as Candy in Mumford

portraying an abused woman who is beaten by her husband and finds the strength to escape him.

Probably most famous for her role of Françoise “Fuffi” in Chocolat Helene Cardona in Chocolat, a role Hélène enjoyed the most because the character is so playful.

A little about the amazing Designer Sue Wong:
Sue Wong lives for one thing: To spread galmour and beauty! Her designs are as timeless as they are romantic flattering, and lyrical. Sue’s fashions work a kind of magic, drawing on a potion of mystique and seduction. Sue Wong’s designs take on a power of their own.

“When a woman puts on Sue Wong, I want to bring out her most confident and feminine self. I strive for that alchemy, where the romance of the clothing transforms a woman into a goddess; an emissary of beauty.” – Sue Wong

Sue Wong was born in rural Southern China in 1949.

Sue Wong’s family escaped to Hong Kong and finally immigrated to Los Angeles in 1995, when Sue was at the age of six.

As a youngster in California, she wanted to pursue a career in fine arts. Although she was won a scholarship to the prestigious California Institute of the Arts after high school, her parents wanted her to become an accountant, or a teacher. Hence, Sue Wong was never formally trained in fashion. But her design talent won out in the end.

Sue Wong has become a prolific designer who has been able to blend her relentless energy with creativity, organization and humanity.

Within a month of enrolling in a fashion program at Los Angeles Technical College, she was awarded a scholarship from Arpeja, a hip fashion company for younger women. In less than a year, she decided to trade her education for a full-time job as a designer in Arpeja’s sportswear division.

Later, she became lead designer at Arpeja, taking the company’s sales from $3 million to $51 million in three short years.

Sue is now the creative force behind Sue Wong, Inc.

In 1999, Sue created an evening wear division, Sue Wong Nocturne, just in time for the millennium.
