Adorable Mary Jo Gruber snags this exclusive interview with the delightful actor and singer, Elijah Chester. As an actor, and Grammy & Dove Award winner… this North Carolina boy has been performing professionally since the age of 10, where he appeared alongside Broadway stars Jason Graae and Chita Rivera. That’s all it took to convince him that the stage and eventually the screen were his passion.

His studies and training have ranged from the NC School of the Arts in dance, UNC at Greensboro in voice and acting, and the prestigious Juilliard School in NYC for acting and voice. Elijah’s extensive experience and scope of work on stage and screen have taken him around the world and afforded him the opportunity to work with such artists as Francis Ford Coppola and Luciano Pavarotti to other numerous stars of stage, film and television. Along with his top recording awards, Elijah is also proud of debuting at the Metropolitan Opera at the young age of 23.

In recent years, he has broadened his attention to not only music, but also to the screen, and his successes still continue as he develops his craft with dynamic film roles from drama to comedy, as well as a growing list of commercials and voice-overs.

“Wait Until Dark” for an enjoyable evening of theater

The Group Repertory Company’s version of “Wait Until Dark” showing at the Lonny Chapman Theatre in North Hollywood, California, was a masterful suspense thriller. “Wait Until Dark” by Frederick Knott is a 45-year-old Broadway hit and the Group Repertory Company held true to the time honored tradition of this play.

Robert Gallo and Liza de Weerd

David Colwell, Director of this suspense thriller, and his crew did a masterful job. All elements came together–from set design, to sound, music, lighting, and casting. Before the play even began I settled into the world due to the detailed set, and before any words were spoken a suspenseful but playful ambiance was created with music and lighting. The moment before was established beautifully with a well selected music cue that got that accompanied the actors’ entrances, got everyone’s attention, and set the mood of the play.

The first scene could run a bit more smoothly, but the rest of play just flew by. The players were well cast and each stepped into their characters flawlessly. It was easy to be engrossed and get caught up in the suspense. The ladies in the cast stood out and the men supported them nicely.

Liza de Weerd did a marvelous job playing Susy, the blind woman who is the target of three ex-cons attempting to retrieve a doll stuffed with drugs. Liza was captivating and believable every step of the way, and the audience rose to their feet in a standing ovation at curtain call.

Lisa de Weerd and Kaylena Rose Mann

Another crowd favorite was the youngest member of the cast, Kaylena Rose Mann. Her great presence and commitment to playing the bratty but helpful neighbor got lots of cheers from the audience.

Chris Winfield, who did a marvelous job designing the set also played Mike Talman. Both him and Bert Emmett who plays Suzy’s husband supported Liza’s performance nicely. Leo Weltman was humorous as Sergeant Carlino, and Robert Gallo playing Harrry Roat had a few hiccups opening night, but will surely deliver the remaining performances.

It was an enjoyable evening of theater and a must see especially for those who have never watched a production of this long-time Broadway favorite “Wait Until Dark.”

Thespian Thoughts review of “Mercy Seat” at Inside the Ford

Your Host: Erica Mer

Date: Wednesday 6 April 2011 9:38 am

Thespian Thoughts review of “Mercy Seat” at Inside the Ford Duly noted.

Welcome to Thespian Thoughts, for theater reviews. I attended the presentation of “Mercy Seat” which can currently be seen at [Inside] the Ford Theater in Hollywood, CA. The show’s realism provides truth and beauty. The subject matter of Mercy Seat is rather controversial, while surrounding the day after September 11. With excellent writing, clever story, and incredible acting, “Mercy Street” is a must see production.

The cast of “Mercy Seat” showcases two actors who capture the show. Their 90 minute back and forth conversation is nothing but enticing. The audience is able to relate to both characters and ride the emotional rollercoaster alongside. The acting goes hand in hand with the writing.

Writing is a key element with any production and “Mercy Seat” provides precision. The show does not feel like you are watching a scripted conversation, instead witnessing a real-life couple go through issues that take place on stage.

I highly suggest the attendance of “Mercy Street” and stand by my recommendation. Every component in the show fits and should not be missed.

“Mercy Seat” is playing at [Inside] the Ford Theater until April 24th. For More information, please visit: www.FordTheatres.org. I’m Erica Mer, with Actors Entertainment.
